What was at stake
Patients managing chronic conditions often feel isolated, overwhelmed by conflicting information online, and struggle to find providers who truly understand their condition. The nonprofit had validated this need through extensive patient interviews but had no technical team and needed to launch quickly to secure continued grant funding. The platform had to be deeply empathetic in its design while scaling to support dozens of condition communities with different informational needs and safety considerations.
How we delivered
Condition-Adaptive Community Architecture
Designed a flexible community framework where each condition group has customized content feeds, symptom trackers, medication logs, and safety guidelines. Built a moderation system combining AI content classification with trained patient moderators to ensure medical accuracy and emotional safety across all communities.
AI Symptom Tracking & Insights Engine
Developed a conversational symptom logging interface using OpenAI API that translates natural language entries into structured health data. The insights engine identifies patterns in symptom frequency, severity, and triggers, generating personalized reports that patients can share with their healthcare providers.
Provider Matching & Verification System
Built a provider directory with condition-specific search and matching, verified credentials via NPI database integration, and patient reviews filtered for authenticity. The matching algorithm prioritizes providers with documented experience treating the patient's specific condition and accepts their insurance.
Empathetic UX & Accessibility Design
Conducted extensive user research with patients across 12 condition groups to design interfaces that accommodate fatigue, brain fog, and motor limitations common in chronic conditions. Implemented large touch targets, high-contrast modes, text-to-speech, and a calm visual language that avoids clinical sterility.
