What was at stake
The startup had a clear vision for transforming how students showcase their creative and academic work, but their initial prototype was limited to single-classroom use with no scalable storage, no content moderation, and no way for administrators to manage portfolios across an entire school district. They needed a platform that could handle the unique challenges of K-12 — child safety regulations (COPPA/FERPA), age-appropriate UX, and adoption by teachers who are not digital natives.
How we delivered
Child-Safe Architecture & Compliance
Designed the platform from the ground up for COPPA and FERPA compliance, implementing parental consent workflows, age-gated features, automated content scanning for inappropriate material, and granular privacy controls that let teachers and parents determine exactly who can see each student's work.
Intuitive Student & Teacher Experience
Built an age-adaptive UI that simplifies for younger students (K-3) with large touch targets, voice-guided upload, and emoji-based tagging, while offering richer tools for older students including markdown editing, multimedia embedding, and peer feedback. Teacher dashboards surface portfolio completion rates and highlight students who may need support.
Cross-Campus Gallery & Discovery
Engineered a federated gallery system using Algolia search that lets students discover and draw inspiration from peers across campuses while maintaining school-level content boundaries. Implemented a moderation queue that gives teachers approval authority before work becomes visible beyond their classroom.
Media Pipeline & Scalable Infrastructure
Built a media processing pipeline on Google Cloud and Cloudinary that handles image, video, audio, and document uploads with automatic format optimization, thumbnail generation, and CDN-backed delivery. The serverless architecture on Firebase auto-scales to handle the burst traffic patterns typical of school hours.
