The Challenge

What was at stake

Digital assets — from cryptocurrency wallets to social media accounts to cloud-stored documents — represent an increasingly significant portion of personal estates, yet existing estate planning tools treat them as an afterthought. The startup identified that billions of dollars in digital assets are lost annually because owners die without leaving access instructions, and existing will frameworks are not designed for assets that require private keys or multi-factor authentication. They needed a platform that bridged legal estate planning with the technical reality of digital asset custody.

Smart Contract Will Architecture

Designed a smart contract system on Ethereum that encodes estate distribution logic, supports multiple beneficiary configurations, and executes transfers based on verified trigger events. Implemented a multi-oracle verification system requiring consensus from independent life event verification services before any transfer executes, preventing false triggers.

Encrypted Document Vault & Key Management

Built an encrypted document storage system using IPFS for decentralized storage and AWS KMS for key management, with Shamir's Secret Sharing to split decryption keys across trusted parties. Documents are only accessible when a configurable threshold of key holders cooperate — ensuring security while preventing single points of failure.

Cross-Asset Estate Plan Builder

Developed an intuitive estate plan builder that guides users through cataloging digital assets (crypto wallets, online accounts, digital files, domain names), assigning beneficiaries, specifying transfer conditions, and recording access instructions. The system generates both on-chain smart contract configurations and traditional legal documents for jurisdictional compatibility.

Security Architecture & Audit

Implemented defense-in-depth security including hardware wallet integration for high-value crypto assets, biometric authentication, anomaly detection on account access patterns, and time-locked transfer windows that allow beneficiaries to contest unauthorized actions. Conducted three independent smart contract audits with all critical findings remediated before mainnet deployment.
